Kate Spade said playing dress up begins at age five and never truly ends. True, right?! I love pretty clothes...especially those with a tribal flair. Let this little girl dress up in colorful kaftans, cholis and kimonos.
Without a doubt, my dearest possession is a hand-embroidered kanchalli top purchased from a Meghwal woman in Kutch. She invited me into her tidy mud hut, passed me a cup of chai, and the fashion show began.
I won’t sugarcoat it folks: I’m a fool for tribal embroidery. And this dear, sweet lady knew I was a sucker the moment she flipped open her dowry chest.
And so it goes that this lovely kanchalli isn’t buried deep in a closet. In fact, no matter where we live it’s one of the first things I unpack. I love the riotous colors that seem to anchor my mismatched furniture (or at least, I think so!). And a daily reminder of that village does my soul good.
