Global Inspired Cocktail: La Casa Rosada Kahlúa Recipe

February 27, 2014

Happy Kahlúa Day! Ok, today is arguably not as famous as Cinco de Mayo, aka National Margarita Day. And unfortunately no parades are planned, nor is the President (at least, the U.S. President) making a speech. But regardless, this chica will be celebrating her inner latina tonight with a special concoction.

So here’s something I mixed up for us (recipe adapted from Havana Delight via Food.com) - and I promise you it’s worth all the caffeine and calories! The cherry juice adds a slightly pinkish color to the drink so I’ve christened this recipe La Casa Rosada, after the President of Argentina’s home. And for those of you who are five steps ahead of me, yes, Kahlúa is made in Vera Cruz, Mexico and has absolutely nothing to do with Argentina. I just happened to learn my favorite Spanish drinking toast while living in Buenos Aires: “Arriba, abajo, al centro, y adentro!” Basically it means: Raise your glasses up, glasses down, glasses to the front, and drink it down/inside!

La Casa Rosada

Ingredients for 2 drinks

  • 2 oz spiced rum
  • 1.5 oz Kahlúa
  • 2.5 oz coconut cream
  • ¾ oz maraschino cherry juice (not grenadine syrup)
  • 5 oz crushed ice
  • garnish: maraschino cherry, sliced orange, pineapple, papaya or coquitos!

Froth in blender (preferably a stick blender): spiced rum, Kahlúa, coconut cream and cherry juice. Garnish with an orange slice, maraschino cherry, pineapple and papaya.

Arriba, abajo, al centro, y adentro! Salud!
